I feel like I should start out apologizing for the distinct lack of GIFs in this post.

Allison Sekemoko is the main character from Julie Kagawa's newest novel, The Immortal Rules aka the first book in the Blood of Eden trilogy. Set roughly sixty years in the future, the story is about Allison's struggle to survive in a world that's been devastated by disease and is now ruled by vampires.

Appearing out of no where, Red Lung began killing off the world's population at an alarming rate. Realizing that the death of the human race would ultimately lead to the extinction of the vampires that had until that point remained hidden in the shadows, Kanin, a master vampire, approached the scientists studying Red Lung and offered vampire blood as a possible cure.

Of course that worked out so well...

A secondary disease evolved as a result of the scientists' experimentation. Called Rabidism, it meant that the people that died of Red Lung didn't stay dead. Instead they rose as some sort of weird cross between a zombie and a vampire. Like zombies, rabids crave blood and flesh, but like vampires, they can only roam at night. During the day they hide from the sun by burying themselves underground.

As a way to survive, master vampires took control, establishing heavily fortified, walled cities that offered protection to the surviving humans. Of course there was a catch. Humans in the city had to register and make regular blood donations in exchange for food rations. Humans that didn't register? Well they were forced to the fringe of the city where they had to scavenge to survive.

Allie is one of those unregistered humans. Her mother died after being forced to make her regular blood donation even though she was sick and Allie swore she would die rather then register. She spent the next few years scavenging in the fringe with a small gang, barely surviving, until the night everything changed.

Forced to search for food in the ruins outside the wall of the city, Allie and her gang were attacked by rabids. Allie sacrificed herself to save Stick, another boy in the gang she had looked after. Left for dead in the ruins, Allie was approached by Kanin and offered a choice. She could die and rise as a rabid or he could turn her into a vampire.

As much as Allie hated vampires, she hated the thought of dying more. She reluctantly agreed to let him turn her and slowly learned about life as a vampire while having some adventures and some smooches with a cute guy. (Did you think I was going to tell you the whole plot?)

As a vampire Allie has all the super special vamp powers aka super speed, super strength, super hearing, super sense of smell, and no need for that pesky breathing thing (although she tries to remember to do that just so she can pass as a human if someone's not looking too too closely). She's pretty indestructible. The only thing that can take her out for good is massive trauma or taking her head. Surprisingly a stake through the heart won't kill her, but it will put her into potentially long -think years - hibernation while her body tries to heal the damage.

Thanks to Kanin's tutelage, Allie is pretty badass with a katana.

But there are some drawbacks to being a vampire. Obviously there's the blood thing. Allie needs to feed roughly every two weeks, more often if she's been injured. If she doesn't feed she'll suffer from what's called Blood Hunger. That's the state where the hunger becomes so overwhelming it can take away her control about who and how she bites.

Sunshine is a big no. While it won't kill her instantly, it does cause her skin to burn and blister and will cause death within a very short time frame. Sunrise also causes Allie to become incredibly lethargic. She needs to sleep during the day and will rise when the sun sets.

Surprisingly, in canon there doesn't seem to be any sort of pesky invite needed before she can enter a home.

Personality-wise? Allie is wary more then anything. Life in the Fringe was hard. Death was always a possibility whether it was from starvation, execution for lawbreaking, or a random vampire snatching. It was hard to get close to people when there's a good chance they were going to die.

Now that she's a vampire things are even tougher. In her world humans are nothing more then cattle. There's no such thing as happy friendships between humans and vamps. Allie's haunted by what Kanin told her shortly before they were separated. It makes no difference who we are, where we came from. Princes, masters and rabids alike, we are monsters, cut off from humanity. They will never trust us. They will never accept us. We hide in their midst and walk among them, but we are forever separate. Alone. You don't understand now, but you will. There will come a time when the road before you splits, and you must decide your path. Will you choose to become a demon with a human face, or will you fight your demon till the end of time, knowing you will forever struggle alone?"

Hopefully being in Fandom will help her realize that she doesn't have to do it alone.

Yeah, I was going to try for stealth but ha! That's so not me. Christine aka [livejournal.com profile] izzyalienqueen here. You can find me on AIM under the same name.

I'm a SAHM of a 9 & 11 year old. My god they were 2.5 & 4.5 when I started playing. Where did the time go? What that means is that I'm usually aroundish during the day, but definitely around in the evenings starting after 8 EST. Yay for kiddie bedtime!

I'm up for anything and looking forward to having an active character again.
